BLR | Southwest Yunnan Province | Entry created by David Mortensen | UC Berkeley

Representation of Tones:

  • 4 underlying tones: /H/ (/55/),
    /L/ (/31/),
    /HL/ (/51/),
    /LH/ (/13/),
  • 4 surface tones: [H] ([55]),
    [L] ([31]),
    [HL] ([51]),
    [LH] ([13]),
  • Tone bearing unit: syllable
  • Underlying underspecification: /L/ may actually be /0/.

Tonal Rules and Alternations:

Spreading:
The whole tone (including contour) is spread onto the toneless aspectual particle /ɤi/ (Li et. al. 1986ː49)

Tonal Domains:

Tonal Assignments in Compounds:
In compounds disyllabic compounds, the tone of the first syllable is always [L]. If the underlying tone of that syllable is not /L/, the first tone of the first syllable is realized as [L] and the tone of the second syllable surfaces unchanged. If the tone of the first syllable is /L/ and the tone of the second syllable is /H/ or /L/, the second syllable is realized as [HL] or [LH] respectively.
