Representation of Tones:

  • 7 underlying tones: /H/ /M/ /L/ /HL/ HM/ /LM/ /MH/
  • 13 surface tones: Controlled syllable stress: /H/ /M/ /L/ /HL/ HM/ /LM/ /MH/
    Ballistic syllable stress: /H/ /M/ /L/ /HL/ HM/ /LM/ (/MH/)
    Although the ballistic /MH/ tone is environmentally predictable, native speakers react to it as distinctive and want it depicted orthographically as distinct from the others. In fact, all 31 etic tones are utilised in whistle communication.
